Experementing with Microfiche

Today's memory was submtted by Tom Schmidt, an '82 alum. It highlights some of the more sophomoric activities that have taken place in Meyer.

Back in the early '80s the modern technology for the card catalog at Meyer consisted of Microfiche readers. These were cards of slide film that could be read in the magnifying readers. A couple buddies of mine claimed that the Microfiche readers would magnify sufficiently to show sperm swimming. They decided to put this theory to the test one night at Meyer. They retired into one of the restrooms for a few minutes, and then brought out a ...eh.... specimen on a Microfiche card. This was carefully inserted into one of the readers. Sadly, yet another urban legend was crushed when no swimming tadpoles were revealed. There was however, a sticky mess left for some poor librarian to take care of.

Thanks, Tom. Now we have one more reason to be glad that the catalog is online!
